Marketing Edit

19th March - 21st March

On Tuesday me and Becki decided that we would start editing and making plans for the films that we wanted to make out of the Tanzania footage. Me and Becki were the only ones that really looked at the footage. The other film students didn't look at most of it because they were concentrating on their FMP's. We decided that we would work on the marketing edits for the college first, then we would work on our FMP'S separately. I think this is a good plan because marketing want the footage as soon as possible. We realised that we didn't really know what marketing wanted in the edits for them. I decided the best thing to do would be to email Kathryn Jefferson who works in marketing and who came with us to Tanzania.

This is the email that me and Becki sent to Kathryn Jefferson:

Hi Kathryn,
We've looked through all the footage and are ready to start editing. We've Started to make a montage but could really do with having a brief or some idea of what marketing want by the end of the week, if that's possible?
Thanks
Emily McGregor

This is the email we received back:

Hi Emily,

Yes of course, I spoke to Jo and Graham about this and suggested that we gave you a brief.

Is the plan still to produce a long full length film of around 20-30 minutes which would show all edited footage and this would be great for everyone on the trip to watch back, but also to share with friends and family and use as part of your coursework (if this fits your brief)? If we do then do a launch of some sort (yet to be confirmed) then this could be screened then. I would certainly like to see this as it would be a lovely reminder of the whole experience.

Then I also need a much shorter version of the film which would need to be maximum 5 minutes long and this would be used purely for Marketing purposes, this version would be used on the website, at college events and shown to prospective students. It would need to achieve the following:

-          Promoting the positive experience the International Trips provide for Blackburn College students

-          Footage highlighting the variety of places/things we were able to see

-          Student interviews describing what the trip did for them (if possible could we prioritise the positive footage perhaps if you have any describing what a life changing experience it was or how it has helped you to realise what you want to do in your career) anything that will move people. I wonder whether if you have something like this, perhaps this would work at the end of the film leaving people thinking, wow ‘I want to go to Blackburn College!’

-          The film would also need to clearly describe the experience so I don’t know if you can produce a voice over explaining the following near the beginning:

“Blackburn College believe international trips are an important part of the curriculum and offer numerous subsidised trips every year to countries all over the World”

At this point im not sure whether you would then want to continue by explaining that your trip was to Tanzania etc etc., but will leave the rest up to you.

I’m in the office all afternoon so if you want to go over this it might be easier to call me or send me your number and I will call you?

Thank you,

Whilst editing the short marketing documentary over this week, we received feedback off our tutor Graham who came with us to Tanzania. We also asked for feedback of a student who has previously been on trips to Africa. We made a few changed from this feedback. Mainly just changing some shots. We agreed that these shots needed to be changed because both me and Becki didn't think that they fit well with the edit. There were some shots that I didn't like that Becki did. This meant that we discussed them and tried new shots. By the end of the week we were both happy with the edit so far. We are over half way  through the edit.

Me and Becki are working well together. We have previously worked on filming and editing pieces of work and I have found that our work ethic causes for a great working relationship. We discuss things that we don't agree on and in the end I have found that we can make our work better by trying different things.
