New Project

Today was the first day back at college in 2013. Straight away I got to working on a new project. Aaron Dunleavy had decided to do a project called 'A Film A Month'. This project was open to everyone.

To start with Aaron showed us his latest drama 'Visitant'. The crew that made this drama talked to a group of us about how they made it and how long it took them to make it. The location that this drama was filmed at is going to be the location that we are going to film January's drama.

We went round everyone in the group and all said what roles we would prefer to do; camera, editing, directing, set design etc. Aaron pitched his idea and told us it was based of a joke that he found. http://www.humormatters.com/holidays/Thanksgiving/thanksgivingjokes.htm

Thanksgiving Divorce

A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says,"I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.

"Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her."

Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this,"

She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way."

To start with we were all given roles;
  • Aaron Dunleavy - Director, Camera Operator and Editer
  • Rebecca Gill - Producer
  • Emily McGregor - Assistant Producer
  • Sammie Scott - Assistant Producer
  • James Hibbert - Assistant director
  • Josh Walker - Script Writer
  • Chelsea Martin - Editing Assistant
  • Josh Bently - Assistant Camera Operator
  • Miranda Miles - Script Writer
  • Matt Howard - Still Photographer
  • Anthony Preston - Sound Manager
  • Ryan Baron - Script Writer (Back Up)
Everyone who didn't get a role on this project where given first choice on the February's Film.

Originally Aaron wanted to recreate this joke with a few changes such as changing it from thanksgiving to Christmas, as we don't have thanksgiving in England. The inspiration also came form Douglas Harts short film 'Long Distance Information'

After a long discussion it was decided that a lot of changes needed to be made because it was too similar to Douglas Harts short film. Everyone was involved in the ideas process whether they were on the  pre-production, production crew, or the post-production crew. We all bounced ideas of each other and explained the problems with some of the ideas to people who didn't understand the problems. In this production group we all came up with the concept and the characters development.

Concept
After an elderly man finishes the dishes (or just places them in the sink) he sits down at the kitchen table with a coffee and a paper, (He is either reading the paper and takes cheeky looks at page 3 or he is doing the crossword. The radio will be being played in the background), then the phone rings. When he answers the phone a woman starts shouting at him telling him that she wants a divorce and can't continue in the relationship. The man tries to calm her down but fails to do so. This will give the audience the illusion that it was his wife on the phone. After the they hang up a woman walks into the house and it is revealed that this man is actually the mans wife and he was on the phone to his sister, who is getting a divorce from her husband.

Characters
The man - We want the man to be a family, working class but with a bit of an edge. Maybe a cheeky side to him and also maybe a bit lazy, shown through his actions. We want the audience to feel sorry for him but he can't be too nice because the woman needs some ammunition to get a divorce and make it look like it is his wife. He will be in the kitchen throughout the drama. At the moment we are hoping that a actor name  Brian Franklin will play the part. Aaron found him on this website http://www.starnow.co.uk/

The sister - Younger than the man (Brother). She will be upset and angry throughout the film. She wants her old relationship back, all the excitement. An idea was that she might have met someone else but this isn't part of the plan yet. We are hoping that a woman name Heather Rowell will play this part. She has previously acted in one of Aaron's past music videos as a woman that finds a locket in a launderette.

The wife - As of today we haven't really talked about how we want the wife to be.

We have given this project quite a short deadline. It has to be done by the end of January. We want to film the kitchen scene on the 19th January. It's a short time away because the location that we have chosen might be sold as it is on the market.

Locations
We need two locations. The first one is a house. We already have permission to use the house. We will be filming in the kitchen. The man and the wife will be filmed in this location.

This is the kitchen that we are going to be filming in

The second location is going to be a public pay phone. Our first choice would be to have an old red public phone box but they are so rare that we might have to have to go for a more up to date version. Miranda pointed out that there is one on Long Lane in Pleasington. Tonight Becki (Producer) is going to go out scouting for phone boxes.
