Pre-Production for Drama a Month & Tanzania

Today I found out that I had been chosen for an examination on my work for part 1 of the course. As well as me there is one other media student (Becki Gill) who was chosen, the rest of the students are art students. I have all the work for this I just need to mount some of this work up and make sure that everything is labelled on my blog so that it is easy to find. To begin with me and Becki did worry (which is nothing new) because we are media students and we aren't used to working in sketch books and mounting work up. We are also being assessed on the art side of the course which is unfamiliar territory to me. After a talk with our tutors I felt more at ease as I know that they will help us make sure that we have everything needed for when the examiners come in.

After this I went back over to media to attend the production meeting about the film a month project. We started this meeting yesterday but there is still a lot of work to be done. I was a bit late to this meeting because of the meeting about the examination of the first part of the course. The group had already had a discussion about which phone box we wanted to use for the drama. I gave my opinion of which one I thought we should use and the reasons why. We were all in agreement that the best phone box to use would be the one on Long Lane. The surrounding area of this phone box is the perfect setting. It is anonymous  which is what we wanted. We want it to be anonymous so that it appears the woman had already left her husband and she doesn't want to be found.

Aaron had been in touch with 'The Crookes' (We had previously filmed a Multi camera studio session with them) and asked them if we could use a Christmas song that they had released a couple of years ago. He told them we want to use this song in the background of the film, make it appear that it is being played on the radio. The band agreed to let us use the song, but to be on the safe side we are still going to contact the bands manager and ask them for permission. The song is called 'It's Just Not Christmas Without You'. We listened to some of the lyrics and they are perfect for the concept of the drama.

We choose to use this song because we decided that we wanted a little bit of a Christmas theme to the drama. We don't want to throw Christmas in peoples faces so there are going to be little touches that show the audience it is around Christmas time. We also got another piece of good news, when Aaron was looking on his Twitter feed he found a tweet from the famous voice over artist Marcus Bentley.
After we all read this tweet  we decided that we would email him and ask him to do a advert for us that will appear in the drama. We didn't know whether he would or not but we thought that it would be a shot. Within a few hours Marcus Bentley got back to us and said that he would love to do the advert and would record it next week and send it to us. We decided to keep this a secret until we pitch tomorrow. Marcus Bentley is best know for big brother.

Unfortunately during the morning production meeting the main script writer Josh Walker didn't tune up. We decided that we would start writing our own version of the script because we still hadn't received the script that Josh Walker had produced. We also decided today on some of the shots that we wanted. Yesterday we wanted the kitchen to be the first shot, but today we said it would be better if the phone box was the first shot. We still need to have a meeting on the shots but first we need to complete the script so that we have a better idea of what shots we want.

In the morning we also emailed the actor that we wanted to play the man (Brother). We were still unsure whether he would do it but we thought that it is worth a shot at asking him. We were open with him and told him all the details including it would be an unpaid role. He got back to us a few hours later and said that he would be happy to play the part, however he doesn't get back form holiday till the 21st January. We think he is perfect for the part so we have decided to put back the filming date for this so that he will be able to play the part. Below is the actors profile on Star now. Here you can see pictures and videos as well as his acting experience. http://www.starnow.co.uk/Nexoman
The other actor that we wanted Heather Rowell has also agreed to take part.

I mentioned that we could do all the other filming before the filming of Brian's part so that we will still be able to meet our deadline. Everyone agreed. We decided that we would go through our schedule tomorrow and make some certain dates.

After dinner Josh Walker arrived with script for us to all look over. We all agreed that some changed needed to be made to it. We all talked about the changes that we wanted to make and agreed on things. Josh Walker agreed to make the changes tonight. Below is the first draft.

The changes we decided that needed to be made to the script are as follows
  • The conversation will end on a low note not on a high
  • The beginning will start with the phone box and not he kitchen
  • The man will not wash the dishes (We want him to appear lazy)
Jamie came in today during the production meeting and told us that he wants us to pitch tomorrow at 10am so that he could see our progress. We will be pitching to our tutors and possibly some of the University tutors and students. We asked him if he would be able to sort out the catering and also if we could have some funding to pay for the actors travel from Liverpool to Blackburn.

We started the production on this film less that 48 hours ago and we had already come pretty far. We have our actors, locations, the first draft of the script, crew lists and we already have a basic schedule. We still need to do recce's, Shot lists, final script and test shoots.

Unfortunately throughout the day I had to keep leaving the production meeting (Along with the producer Becki Gill) to be able to attend meetings about the Tanzania trip that I will be going on, on 22nd February. Any information that we missed we made sure that we were told when we went back to the production meeting.
At the first meeting we got given a booklet that had all the information in it that we would need.
  • The Staff on the trip (Including there contact information)
  • The Students on the Trip and what course they are on.
  • Some basic information about Tanzania (Temperature, Currency, president, national anthem etc)
  • Information on the places we will visit
  • Flight details
  • Hotel information
  • Clothes to take
  • Injections
  • Insect repellent/sun cream
One of the most important parts for us was to find out what lodges we will be staying at and what places we will be visiting so that we could do some research and come up with our ideas.

After the first meeting today we had another meeting with Graham Barnes (A tutor that is attending this trip to help the film makers). This meeting was to talk about what we want to film whilst we are out in Africa.

The Film makers going are;

  • Emily McGregor
  • Alex Brand
  • Lewis Johnson
  • Rebecca Gill
  • Jordan Gott
  • Adam Hay
Graham really likes the first idea that we have. A couple of weeks ago Alex said that we should do video diaries as we yet don't know whether we will have internet access to update our blogs. We all thought this was a good idea. I then developed the idea into doing a documentary about our experience out in Africa. Since then the idea has developed into something that we all think will make an amazing documentary. We didn't just want to make a documentary about us and the experiences we are going to have whilst there. We set a facebook chat up a couple of months ago so that we could all get our ideas down and each of us could comment on this. It was the easiest way of communication as everyone has been so busy with other projects and we couldn't find the time to meet. We all decided that we wanted to make a documentary about wild life, the cradle of life and the Masai Mara tribe. Graham would like us all to meet once a week so that we can write a treatment and our goals when we are out there. He wants us to do this so that we don't go out there and just create a holiday video. We really need to research the subjects before we go out there so that we can ask the question. I came up with the idea of making a package with everything in it including the treatment and research, that everyone can have. Graham has given us a treatment example that he wrote so that we can work from this. He is going to help us with this work because we only have about six weeks until we go and we are all working on other projects.
